Location of the commune

The Sejny commune is located in the north-eastern part of Poland, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. It borders the Puńsk commune to the north, the Krasnopol commune to the west, the Giby commune to the south, and the border to Lithuania forms the eastern border. The entire commune is located in the basin of the Nemunas. Favorable environmental conditions and a favorable area structure of individual farms make it possible to produce organic farming and combine it with agritourism. Farms play a dominant role in the structure of farms. The average size of a farm is 12 hectares.

The administrative area of ​​the commune is 21,801 ha, 5,892 ha of which are under forests, 1,492 ha, and 126.64 ha are covered by a reserve. The commune consists of 48 villages /wsi/. A typical agricultural commune. 4,240 people live in the commune. The Sejny commune is an important point on the map of the country. The commune is crossed by the main national road Augustów – Ogrodniki and the provincial road of Suwałki – Ogrodniki.

The Sejny commune is characterized by a landscape with a varied topography with numerous hills, lakes and rivers, as well as naturally valuable forest and peat complexes, the multitude and variety of surface forms: moraine embankments, undulating bottom moraines, oaks, kemes, drumlins, lake bowls and gutters, ravines and ravines as well as boulders constitute the landscape, recreational and tourist attractiveness of this region. There are 36 lakes in the commune. The largest of them are: Gaładuś, Hołny, Berżnik, Dmitrowo, Sumowo, Sztabinki, and Sejny.

The exceptional natural value of this area is evidenced by the presence of rare and endangered aquatic, peatland and meadow ecosystems as well as rare species of animals and plants. An example is the Żagarskie Peat bog, which belongs to raised bogs and is one of the largest and better preserved bogs in north-eastern Poland. There are 15 types of natural habitats valuable from the European point of view in the area of ​​the Sejny Commune. These are i.a. inland dunes with sandy grasslands, oxbow lakes and natural eutrophic lowland reservoirs and submontane rivers with colony communities, dry thermophilic heathlands, inland sand grasslands, high peat bogs with peat-forming vegetation, Central European and subcontinental oak-hornbeam and forest ash forests, and ash forests. There are 6 plant species important for the preservation of European nature, including Peat bog saxifrage, open pasque-flower and Loesela lip liner. In addition, there are many other species of peat bog plants that are endangered or extinct in other parts of Poland or Europe. Some of them are postglacial relics, e.g. Lapland willow, peat saxifrage or the common fat. There are 22 species of animals valuable from the European point of view, incl. bittern, white-tailed eagle, black stork, beaver, black kite, kite, lesser spotted eagle, lynx, marsh owl, crested newt, wolf, otter, kingfisher.
